Berlin is a city that never fails to surprise, especially when it comes to its diverse food scene. From cozy breakfast spots to exotic (vegetarian) dinner experiences, the city is a playground for food lovers. Here’s a guide to a perfect day of eating your way through Berlin, from sunrise to sunset.
Breakfast in Berlin
Waking up: Breakfast at Sofi Bakery
Start your day with a visit to Sofi Bakery, a beloved spot (nestled in a beautiful höfe) where the smell of freshly baked bread fills the air. The highlight here is their sourdough bread which is crusty on the outside, soft and flavourful on the inside. Pair it with butter and jam or chesse and eggs for a simple yet satisfying breakfast.
Mid-Morning Snack: Laugenbrezel at Der Bäcker
After a leisurely breakfast, take a stroll through Prenzlauer Berg and make a pit stop at Der Bäcker Prenzlauer. Here, the Laugenbrezel (pretzel) is a must-try. Golden-brown, slightly salty, and perfectly chewy, it’s the ideal snack to keep you going as you explore the neighborhood’s charming streets.
Lunch in Berlin
Homemade Sourdough Bread at Neumanns Café
For lunch, head to Neumanns in Friedrichshain. This cozy café offers a menu full of fresh, seasonal dishes. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty sandwich or a light salad, Neumanns has you covered. We ordered the delicious 'Spinat Brandade', which is homemade toasted sourdough bread, with braised spinach, poached egg, brandade (mashed potatoes with anchovy) and a salad.
Veggie Delights at Seerose
If you’re craving a plant-based meal, Seerose in Kreuzberg is the place to be. This buffet-style restaurant offers a wide selection of veggie dishes. Your plate will be filled with colorful salads, roasted vegetables, and savory stews, all made with organic ingredients.
Mediterranean Flavors at The Small Garden
Another great lunch spot for vegetarians is The Small Garden. This place offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu with dishes like manti (a type of Turkish dumpling), mezze bowls, and fresh salads.
Annelies for Something Unique
For a more unique lunch experience, visit neighbourhood café Annelies in Kreuzberg. Here, you can enjoy scrambled eggs served on sourdough toast, topped with smoked egg yolk and fennel kimchi. The combination of flavors is bold and unexpected, making it a memorable meal.
Dinner in Berlin
Korean Food at YamYam
As the evening rolls in, take a break at YamYam in the heart of Mitte. This Korean eatery is known for its delicious fried tofu rice bowl. The tofu is perfectly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and served over a bed of rice with a tangy, spicy sauce that’ll leave you craving more.
Japanese Delights at Smartdeli
Looking for a cozy and original place to eat? Head to Smartdeli, a Japanese deli and restaurant that offers a range of authentic dishes. We noticed a neighbourhood atmosphere where many people from the area came for a bite to eat, or to pick up take-away while enjoying a beer in the meantime.
German Comfort Food at Schwarzwaldstuben
No trip to Berlin would be complete without trying some German comfort food. Schwarzwaldstuben offers Maultaschen, a type of German ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach, served alongside a traditional potato salad. It’s hearty, comforting, and utterly satisfying - a true taste of Germany.
Georgian Dishes at Kin Za
For dinner with a twist, visit Kin Za, a Georgian restaurant. Here, you’ll find dishes bursting with flavors of the Caucasus. Here you can try famous dishes like for example the Khachapuri-pizza, a cheese-topped bread, or Penovani Khachapuri, a puff pastry with different types of fillings. We loved their Malosol (cucumber pickles), Badrijani (eggplant rolls with walnuts), Khinkali (vegetarian dumplings) and Ajapsandali (an eggplant, bell pepper and potato stew).
Drinks in Berlin
Nightcap: Wine at Rocket Wine or Beer at Mikkeller
After a full day of culinary exploration, unwind with a a glass of wine at Rocket Wine, a cozy spot perfect for sipping on natural wines and reflecting on the day’s delicious journey.
If you’re more in the mood for beer, head to Mikkeller in Mitte, which is known for its Danish craft beer. This bar offers a wide selection of brews to choose from, alongside some light bites like crisps.
Vegetarian Currywurst at CultCurry Mitte
To end your day on a quintessentially Berlin note, stop by CultCurry Mitte for a (in our case vegetarian) currywurst with fries. This plant-based take on the classic Berlin snack is just as flavourful and satisfying as the original. But for those who prefer meat there is also the traditional option. Nice to know: their most famous customer is probably Rihanna, who stopped by for a late night snack after one of her concerts...
This guide with the best food and drinks in Berlin is of course not complete without coffee! So check out my blog post Best Coffee Shops in Berlin to see where to find them.
